We Made The List, and it's One That Really Matters!

We Feed Raw is honored to be included on Susan Thixton’s Approved Pet Food List for 2024. Susan Thixton is the founder of The Truth About Pet Food, a newsletter that helps make pet food safe.

As a pet food consumer advocate, Susan is a veritable expert in pet food safety and regulations. She’s extremely picky about what she feeds her own pets and only includes companies on her list that she would feed to her own animals.

How Do Pet Food Companies Make The List?

To be considered, pet food companies must respond to a long list of questions about sourcing, quality, and frequency of testing, and then provide verification of claims. No pet food company pays to be considered or included in The List.

The criteria?

Quality, integrity, and transparency.

How Many Companies Made The List in 2024?

Only 43 pet food brands (primarily sold in North America) made The List in 2024. With many hundreds of pet foods available on the market today (perhaps a thousand or more), being one of the 43 brands chosen for The List is a huge honor.

Why Does The List Exist?

Most pet foods in the United States are "feed grade," meaning they can violate state and federal laws that govern the safety of food. In fact, the FDA itself specifically allows feed-grade ingredients to violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Manufacturers aren't even required to inform pet owners if their food includes condemned animal parts and other ingredients that aren't allowed in the human food supply.

That's why The List exists: to highlight high-quality pet foods that provide verification of:

  • •Human-grade food ingredients

  • •Non-GMO or organic ingredients (if applicable)

  • •Human-grade supplements (if applicable)

  • •Meats sourced from humanely raised animals (if applicable)
